“What a Relief” 11-4-08
Today will be the last day for the 2008 Political campaign, and we can all resume some sort of normalcy in our lives, and particularly in our conversations-that is the ones with whom we disagree.
It would be very interesting to catalogue all of the misstatements of facts, or as commonly called-lies, that have been issued by the campaigns, and also the political promises that have been made by the candidates. Promises that they know they cannot fulfill, we know that as well, and they know that most of us know it. But there must still be a lot of ignorance out there for the candidates to continue these misleading statements in the hope of convincing some last minute deciders.
So what can be done about this charade every election? The only answer is for everyone of us to get a lot smarter so that we can recognize the truth when we see it, and then have the country’s interest at heart when we use that information to cast our vote.
I believe that the public is getting a lot smarter, aided by certain parts of the media who still believe in presenting both sides of an issue, and exposing false statements and impossible promises. But unfortunately some voters will still cast their votes on such trivial matters as the candidate’s wardrobe, or the candidate’s grandfather’s heritage. Most often these voters are just looking for a reason to vote against someone they just don’t like. I guess that’s human nature. But I hope that knowledge will trump triviality in the future. Now let’s all get back to productive work.
I’m Roger Larson, and that’s the way I see it.
